An annotated bibliography is a reference list with a short paragraph under each source. It looks simple, but the marks come from how well each paragraph summarises, judges and connects the source to your topic. This guide shows what to write, how to format it and how to find good sources faster.
Each entry has two parts: the full reference in the required style, and an annotation, which is a paragraph that tells the reader what the source is about and why it is worth using. Nursing courses assign it to build research habits, and it often prepares the ground for a literature review, an evidence-based practice paper or a capstone. Check whether your instructor wants descriptive annotations, evaluative ones or both. Most nursing rubrics expect all three elements below.

Your instructor may set a word range per entry. If they do, keep to it, and if they do not, a single well-built paragraph is a sensible target.

Notice the pattern: what it is, what it found, how far it can be trusted, and why you need it. Write your own annotation in your own words, and keep it specific to the source.
Instructors use these terms loosely, so read the brief. A descriptive annotation summarises the content only. An evaluative annotation adds a judgement of quality and credibility. A reflective annotation explains how the source shapes your own thinking or project. Most nursing assignments combine all three, which is why the pattern above works as a default. If your brief asks for descriptive only, trim the appraisal and relevance sentences rather than leaving them out silently, and ask your instructor if the wording is unclear.
